I didn't do ANYTHING with the heater hoses that are located in the engine area. The two that stick through the firewall connect to the backside of the HVAC unit.
When it's time to disconnect those lines on the inside of the car, you'll need rags to mop up some coolant.

I think that the only way you'd develope a leak on the engine side, is if while working on the inside of the car, you pull or forget to disconnect from the HVAC unit.
