Possible to repair key remote? 850

Both key remotes on my 97 have failed, not suddenly but over a period of weeks. Took more and more clicking to make them work until finally they gave up, new batteries by the side. I know there is someone out there on the board who repairs ABS modules, but I don't think with the remotes it's a chip problem, but rather a mechanical one with the switch. You can press down one side or the other of the lock or unlock button and it will work on one side and not the other. But eventually the device gives up entirely. A computer hardware friend of mine said he doubted there was anything wrong with the chip, that it was the switch/contacts that had worn out. Any help, please. Dick
