Frozen Struts 850 1997

Anyone ever had their struts freeze in the winter? I took my '97 850-R
into the shop yesterday to replace a broken strut bushing and was told that
the struts were actually frozen and that caused the torn bushing. Turns
out that water had leaked into the strut and would freeze in the cold weather (in this case Chicago). The struts (Bilstein's) were only 18 months old.
I did noticed that the suspension seemed quite stiff on cold morning and would loosen up when the car got warmer.
