Weak 850R top end

My '96 850R (106K miles, stock with K&N filter) runs and starts smoothly and I thought it was in good tune/condition, but on the very rare occasion (once or twice in a year as I recall) that I've topped it out, it runs strong to about 110 and then sneaks up on 115/118mph. I've never seen 120, much less anything more. Does this strike anybody as a weak top end from an 850R? I don't care about bragging rights or anything childish like that, but I'd rather get what I should out of it. Could old plugs/wires/rotor make much difference? What else could account for the low top end? Everywhere else it runs great.
