Positioning of Thermostadt 850 1996

Hello All,

Recently, I replaced the thermostat on my 1996 850 GLT. I noticed that the new Volvo thermostat had a single "arrow" engraved on one side only of the steel arch that crosses over the opening of the thermostat and holds the spring action in place. I asked the Part's Dept. clerk at the dealer if I had to install the thermostat in a particular direction based upon the position of the arrow? He said I had to install the thermostat with the arrow pointing toward the front or the bumper of the car. When I removed the original thermostat (I bought the car new), the arrow was pointing directly toward the driver's side fender. I disregarded the clerk's advice and installed the new thermostat in the same position as the old one I removed.

Does anyone know if the positioning of this "arrow" determines how you should install the thermostat? If it does, in what direction should you install it? Since I've installed the thermostadt, I've had no problems and eliminated the original problem (the engine ran cool). Please advise. Thanks to all who respond and let me wish everyone a Happy New Year!

Hugh
