Squealing brakes....again 850

I know this issue comes up alot, but I don't know anything about brakes so I need some VERY BASIC questions answered. 1.) My brakes are screeching LOUDLY. I haven't had any brake work done on the car since I purchased it 34,000 miles ago. Do I simply need new pads or do I need the discs as well? Or can I get away with just putting some anti-squeal paste on (is this what that stuff is for?)?

What are the typical life spans on pads and discs? Also, do you have to replace shims whenever pads are replaced (I don't know what shims are for)? Thanks to anyone who has the time to educate me about the basics of brake work.
