1998 V70 AWD inspection

I have been looking at a 1998 v70 with AWD. My concern as you might imagine is with the AWD especially the bevel gear. I have contacted a few D.C. area dealerships and indy shops that say that they can do nothing in a pre purchase inspection to evaluate the condition of the AWD. Can the AWD system be inspected to see if it is in good shape? What would I need to ask them to do or do my self with out a lift? Also in doing VS and BB site searches I have found posts that say you can disconnect the system if it go bad and have a FWD car. Every shop I have asked has said no that it is not at all possible. Is this also true? I would love to get some rock solid confirmation on these issues prior to having a pre purchase ingestion done on this car. Volvo techs please help me out here.

Thank You

Aaron
