HEATER BLOWER SWITCH 400 1986

can anyone help me please??? i have a volvo 440S1.8i, 1996 model,when im driving,and have the heater blower on hot, if i turn it onto cold, it wont change over to cold,or vice versa until i switch my engine off, does anyone know what the problem is, futher more, is it a major fault to fix?? thankyou :)
