As already mentioned. Oil is ALWAYS checked cold. FWIW, '93 Volvos had a history of annoying "low oil" lamps years ago that would come on whenever it felt like it...they dicontinued the sensor/lamp on later models. You may want to remove the lamp at the same time keeping an eye on your oil as 850's as do a lot of modern cars burn oil...
