Tires

My '99 came with a new set of MXV4's when I bought it in May. These are the worst tires I have driven on in recent memory. While they do have good wet stability, they have very poor dry traction, and a very squirmy feel when pushed.

I found a set of "Volan" 17's and found one of the closeout sets of Yokohama AVS Intermediates - difference is night and day. I did give up some wet traction, but the driving feel is worth the compromise. Note: These, and the replacement Yoko AVS ES100, are NOT winter tires. They lose traction as the temps get below 40.

For all-seasons, I would look at the Dunlop SP9000, the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 and the Pirelli P6000. I've used the Kumhos on a different car, and they are an excellent all-around tire for the performance-minded driver. They don't feel very good for the first thousand miles, but they break into it. The 712's also like a slightly higher tire pressure.

You have options, especially for the money. There are better tires for less money than the Michelins. Good luck in your hunt.
