S40 Key Fob Replacement

Hey all, I am a little puzzled by the sheer number of remote key fobs that say they are compatible with my 2003 S40 1.9T.

As the old one was going bad it was behaving very erratically until I finally went down to the dealer and found out that the existing fob was basically bad and I needed another.

Well a new one from them would run about $150 and then they said they were the only place to get it programmed, which was also $150. So $300 to get the remote working again

Then I checked eBay and there are MANY that say they fit an 03 S40 at a small fraction but then apparently there is still the programming to do.

Anyway been through this?
