I second the vote for a fluid change. Low or worn fluid may not be the cause of the trouble but the peace of mind knowing that it's fresh is a good thing. It's not a terrible job as IIRC. Redline MTL came recommended and is what I used.

IMO a likely culprit is a worn shifter and linkage. There's plastic isolation mounts that could be worn after so many years of use.
