XC90 spare tire chain hoist won't crank down XC90 2014

I wonder if it's binding on the way down because it doesn't have any weight on it as the chain comes off the spool. Maybe tying a piece of rope to the end of the chain and pulling on it as you unwind the spool, to simulate the weight of the wheel, would help? Just a thought...
