the case of the spinning starter ..... 850 1997

'97 850 GLT, 200K

when the engine is cold. the starter works as it should.
drive a few miles (warm engine), stop, then try to do restart & the starter just spins without engaging the flywheel.
as the starter slows down, it sounds like it's trying to engage the flywheel.
after several attempts, the starter will engage enough to start the car.

Question

what are the changes that the starter just needs to be removed & have the pinion-shaft/solenoid just be cleaned and lubed.

I can pull a used starter from a parts car (180K), but I was planning on driving the parts car to the scrapyard, plus it's then twice the labor (working outside) .....
