Over charging the AC will make it less efficient, and the higher pressure will make the 'leak' larger. If the high pressure end exceeds 500psi, or so, the purge valve will open with a huge bang and you will loose about 8 oz.

The 'click' you hear could be the recirc valve trying to open or close. Are both cars ECC or MCC?
