Driver's power seat "blackout' while driver is seated S60

This is a 2007 S60 with dual power seats. When I first discovered a problem, it appeared that the drivers seat controls were unresponsive at times. After a period of confusion, it became clear that I can wait and come back in 2 minutes, and the controls are working.

If I walk up the car and open the driver's door, the seat controls work. But, when I take the next step and sit on the seat (before even closing the door or inserting the key), the controls go dead. To get back the seat controls, I have to exit the car and wait 2 minutes. Something is wrong, b/c nobody would design the seat controls to blackout the moment you put your weight on the seat.
