Car keeps running with keyless remote removed

A week ago I loaned the "new" XC60R to my daughter to go to a local rodeo. She parked the car, hit "stop" & removed the remote. With the rodeo noise, getting 3 kids out of the car, etc & the almost noiseless engine, she didn`t realize the car was still running. When she came back to the car a few hours later as she approached the car, she noticed it was still running. Good thing the tank was full!
When she got home she asked how it could keep running with the keyless remote removed. I didn`t think it was possible so called the dealer the next day & they said "Yes, the car will run with the remote removed".
What is the point of this "feature"......... seems like a potential safety issue.
