evap code. Where to look? V70-XC70 2000

I have a 2000 base model v70. I have had a check engine for a long time. The codes are small and large evap emissions leak. It used to come on only once in a while during a long drive now it will always come on. I cannot get gasoline with the motor off without having a very hard starting problem and waiting about 3 to 5 minutes for the car to run normal. i had it to a shop with a smoke machine. The light came on the next day. (sears auto). I removed the passenger rear wheel well cover and poked around the hoses. It looked ok. I will maybe get an answer here or take it to a Volvo shop,not a dealership. Any way thanks and if you read this far i hope you have a good day.
