Thanks Bill & Klaus,

It was the switch. Noticed brake lights worked or they didn't intermittently. This ruled out the bulb failure sensor. Replaced the switch and all is well.

But I still have not found the failure sensor. One of these days I suppose I will run across it.

Thanks again for your help. Now I need to find new strut bearings/bushings for my daughter's S40. The fun never ends.
