Caution: Repairing Shifter Can Lead to Broken Windshield V70-XC70 2003

I decided to dig into the shifter to see if I could fix the park lock solenoid. One part of the disassembly process calls for the shifter knob to be removed by pulling it straight up VERY HARD. So I got myself all wierdly positioned kind of backwards over the shifter so that I could pull up on the knob with both hands. I gave it all I had to get it to release. Well, when it released I elbowed the windshield hard enough to crack it - a nice big spider crack dead center in the W/S! That was Friday night. The next day, $140 and a 30 minute house call had me a new W/S.

On the bright side, cleaning out the solenoid plunger real well with some spray brake cleaner while clicking the brake pedal on-off-on-off seems to have returned the solenoid to proper working order. (I was just praying there wouldn't be any sparks to ignite the brake cleaner in my face.)
