The ripoff is in the marketing of the so-called "Premium" gas, not one octane point. I have always run 87o gas in my cars except when I get doubtful and try a few tankfuls of high-cost stuff. Have not been able to convert myself yet. My present car, S70 is not turbo-charged, but I have owned a turbo Mazda 626 before this car. The difference was never enough to justify the cost, though in a turbo a little more prominent. The only advantage to the "Premium" is the detergent package, which is a big un-known (no gas brand discloses their additives to my knowledge). So, instead of paying for the un-known detergent package in the "Premium", I buy regular gas and run fuel system cleaner through the car now and again. I also perform "Italian Tune-up" every weekday as a matter of course while driving on the highway part of my commute to work. Car runs great, and all my previous cars always ran great on regular. I've put on several 100's of thousand miles on my cars in my life, mostly on regular gas. Never had an engine problem. Conclusion: PREMIUM GAS IS A RIPPOF 91, 92, what have you. If the car doesn't knock on 87 anything more expensive is a waste. Some older (80's) American cars knocked like crazy on anything less than 93. This is the only application for the stuff IMO. AAA had a write-up on this subject years ago with similar conclusions.
Sorry if I offend anyone, just have a tough time keeping quite on this subject.
