1987 Volvo 245 Losing Power Intermittently

Sounds like a fuel problem. Fuel pump, clogged filter?
Possible one of the two relays (Fuel and RSR) acting up before outright quitting.
Relays often have erratic behavior before quitting and are some hard to track down when they start working again. Given the age of the relays and the mileage, it isn't a bad idea to change out the RSR and the fuel relays with NEW (not used).
Pick a mileage or age of the car and somewhere it becomes a good idea to change
them, Especially if you're going to keep the car and are interested in reliability. Check the posts for Fuel and RSR relays, which are proven troublemakers.
