rear wiper and (automatic) tailgate lock not working V70-XC70 1998

Is the wire harness something that plugs in at either end? That is, is there an attachment as the wiring comes into the tailgate as well as where the wiring connects to the wiper motor?

The tailgate lock works with the key, and I can open it manually, but I was hoping to make it so that I (my daughter, really; it's her car) could unlock it with the remote.
