Depending on the size of the leak, you could just add a can of r134a once in a while to kick the can down the road for a few years.

Do you need a new compressor or just adjust the clutch? You can shim the clutch easily with the bread clip method, takes about 30 minutes or less.

Having the switch off does not completely disable the AC, putting the vent control on defrost will engage the compressor (unless the pressure in the system is to low).

You know that it will cost 10 hours of labor to replace the evaporator, plus a few good parts. My dealer is over $2K for that.
