Removal of ENTIRE heater control assembly 850 1997

The stem to the drivers side heater control unit no longer turns to adjust the temperature unless you use a pair of pliers due to the stiffness in the stem. Now I am likely going to need to replace the whole unit -- not just the front panel that the knobs attach to. Last evening I went to the junkyard and found a unit (which looked identical to mine) in a 95 and was able to easily remove the outer plate (two screws under the inner and outer temperature knobs) however the unit that the stem is connected to is behind that, and there are a few springs (from what I could tell in the dusklight) and maybe a hose or two connected to that back of that part, as well as it is EXTREMELY difficult to maneuver it (because of those springs and hoses) inside of the cavity even with the radio out (which it was). Anyone have any tips on removal of the ENTIRE heater control unit?
