Barry,

As John mentioned you pop up the centre console...two torx screws holding the ashtray, two more for coin tray and another found inside the centre arm rest. Inside the arm rest you should see a flap. Remove the flap and it will expose another screw. Also under the handbrake there is a plastic insert that also needs to be popped out. After all this is removed the centre console can be lifted up...take care when putting back that the carpet is tucked in all around. The bulb sits directly under the gear shifter at the base of a "funnel". This works for my '94, your '97 shouldn't be much different.
