That was the problem. Cleaned and inspected everything and also learned the cable connections. Not a wonder it would get stuck. Connections at the ign. sw. are few but those near the shifter are many. Gave it a slight shot of WD40 also.

Klaus, you are right and the Haynes manual is wrong re: the switch removal. Most thankful I didn't need to do it yet. Car only has 129K on it.
