Running on empty!!! V70 AWD 1997 140.000 mls. V70-XC70 1997

Hello all.
Today, the car stopped on my usual single track, remote west Highland road.It Had been misfiring under load, for about three minutes or so.
When it finaly died it felt just as if it had run out of petrol, but there was more than five galls.showing on the gauge!!
By magic, someone came by that I knew, and she took me all the way back home (lucky fairy). I returned to the car (with another lucky fairy)with a five gallon "Rommel"can of emergency fuel and put in about eleven litres (2 and bit Uk galls). After letting the fuel system prime through; the car ran normaly, still showing five gallons.
Obviously a stuck sender unit I thought. I drove to the filling station (£1.08 per litre now! ) and replaced the contents of the jerry can, and filled the main tank, total 73.03lt OR 78.8 uk ££££s.
The drivers hand book claims tank capacity is 70lt,so, near enough I think. Another not so little job for me to do. On the way home the milage clicked over 140.000. The gauge showing full!
I thought you might all like to know.
I hope the timing belt isn't so punctual.
Best regards,Howard. Isle Of Skye.
