Is 15W-40 too heavy for a 850 5 cylinder engine for summer-time hwy usage?? Please help 850

My parents have always used 20/50 Valvoline in their Volvos dating all the way back to '75, and have never gotten anything less than 350k out of their engines. I should add that their Volvos live in a rather warm, if not outright hot, area of California. Have a most brillant day :)
