Odomoeter gear replacement with dashboard removal................. 850 1995

This may sound like a dumb question but here goes anyway.
Being that I am down to just one car these days, I wondered if anyone thinks there would be any problems if I ran my 850 without the dashboard in place and the speedo cluster out? My reasoning for this is that I want to attempt to fix the odometer and like a challenge but am not your type of mechanic that will break down a transmission over the weekend and put it back together just as quick. I don't always have a good block of free time to finish the job. Other than the fact I would not be able to tell how fast I was going, I did not think this a problem.
