CHECK Engine 850 1997

This is really annoying me..About a month ago the check engine light came on, went to the shop to get it checked out, they said i needed a new catalytic convertor, something to do with oxygen/filter, i don't really know anything about cars so.. I got that done, $600, light was off, and maybe a week later, the stupid light came back on. The car doesn't drive any differently and I've heard that the light sometimes doesn't really mean anything and I do not want to go back to the shop because well obviously they suck, even though they should fix it for free since technically they never fixed it in the first place. I don't want to go to another place cause it'll cost more money to start all over. So any advice? Should I just ignore it? I've read that basically 96-98 are the only models where you can't really turn the light off by yourself unless you buy something, just my luck, and i'm not gonna buy it.
so any help would be nice cause i'm fucking clueless
