Steering problems S70

I did a wheel alignment again and my indy mechanic told me that rack-and-pinion(sp)? RP could be going...
So the questions are:
1.Is there a way to tell if that is the case? Noice/vibration/other noticable problems?
2. If the RP is bad what kind of damage I may be looking at if it is true, in time, parts and money?
Much obliged for your help.
