ABS Module, PNP Sensor, MicroSwitch? V70-XC70 1999

My 1999 V70 AWD has been flashing lights at me since last summer. The mechanic said it was a bad ABS module. Since then I have read about PNP sensor (dreaded flashing arrow, which often comes on after the ABS and Brake lights come on), Micro Switch which might have to do with the car remaining in third gear when the lights come on, or ABS module which might encompass all of the above. When the arrow is on I have to downshift at stop lights because it's too sluggish to get going with traffic. These lights come on and go off for no apparent reason and I have managed to live with the problem.

Can I rely on the codes that the Check Engine computer spits out? When the mechanic looked, there were all kinds of codes I think. That fact and the cost of a new ABS module made me decide to live with it. I read a post about this fellow who apparently repairs the ABS module if you send it to him. Has anyone else tried that and is he for real?

Have I damaged the car, transmission, anything, by not fixing this? Can I be sure that replacing the ABS module will stop these lights or is it possible I need those other sensors?

Thanks SO much for any input!
