Hi all,
I normally only post in the 200 forum but got a call from my parents regarding their 1998 V70 XC. Apparently it started running rough this weekend and then on Monday it barely had any power. I suggested bringing it in to our local Volvo guru for perhaps a diagnosis as I don't have much experience with the newer bricks. Figured it needed a tuneup or perhaps one of the plugs/wires were shot. I guess it's much more serious. This is what my old man said to me: Prelim diagnosis is that somehow a piece of foreign object (not sure what..metal maybe) got lodged in one of the valves and totally mucked up one of the valves so that it is no longer opening/closing. I also thought that the timing belt could be the culprit, being an interference engine but it was replaced at 55K. Basically they don't know the extent of the damage but apparently this was a freak of nature at 88K. The car is no longer under warantee but this seems ridiculous that this happened at only 88K and the 'rents are quite upset. This is their first "upgrade" after owning three 245s. I'm not sure if they are going to take the head off and send it out to be machined, but who knows...it might be completely ruined so even a valve job might not help. Our Volvo mechanic is extremely fair and knowledgeable and we have always trusted him with the diagnosis. Has anyone taken up a matter like this or similiar with Volvo directly?? Certainly not a B230F engine. Any thoughts are welcome!!
Thanks,
Adam
