Emmission system service - Check engine warning

Hello,
Just found this forum and have seen a lot of related stuff to my issue. I have a 2001 XC with ~$75K miles on it. I'm hoping you can help me - the two dealers I've been to can't seem to! For months I have been getting Emmission System Needs Service and Check Engine warnings. These stay on for a few weeks at a time then go off for a while. I am very careful to "click" the gas cap a few times when screwing it on although I don't make several complete revolutions. One additional symptom that I've not seen mentioned here is that many times when I fill up the tank (key is not in the ignition, cap screwed on with clicks) the car does not want to start. After a bit it starts but runs very rough/stalls for a couple of minutes. After that it runs fine. I can deal with annoying warning lights but this seems to indicate a real problem. The dealers I've talked to have done nothing but check the codes (they say it only points to gas cap) and question me about screwing it on correctly. Thanks!
