Synthetic ATF killing MPG? 850 1996

Just changed my '96 850R ATF at 106K to Mobil 1 synthetic (yes, Dexron III with Mercon). Irrespective of any performance/perception differences, now I only get 19.x MPG instead of 21.x MPG. Anybody else experience a drop in fuel economy? I'll dump the $60 synthetic and replace with regular if that's what it takes. Driving habits have not changed, but now that I'm aware my mileage is off I perceive that it takes more effort just to get down the highway.
