flashing fault arrow on automatic trans 850 1996

Hi! yet another problem. my wife (not the problem!!) said when puting car in Drive, it felt sluggish to pull off sometimes.

I drove myself yesterday all fine, and i was first to drive today. Started ok, seemed to rev higher than normal, put in Reverse, all ok, reversed out of garage, but noticed the flashing arrow - put in 'D' car moved, but not very well. Noticed mode selector also flashing - felt like in winter mode. Turned off, check oil level, all ok (oil recently changed).

Re-started; light still flashing, but all gears now available, and drove ok. Drove about 20 miles fine. Thought the arrow might go away!! (like my AC/REC lights flash every now and again, and AC works fine!) but its still on.
As '96 model, i cant access codes. Assume this is a PNP switch. Now ive never changed one before - what is it? what does it do? (ive tried moving lever back and forth to no affect)Will i need special tools to 're-align' (I only took the gearbox out a few months ago to change rear oil seal - took me 13 hours)

Assume its okk to drive till problem solved???

An help appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin
