serpertine belt 850

my 93 sepentine belt tension mechanisim is jumping all over the place and making loud grumbling sound. I removed the mechanisim and found that it seems to be ok. checking the other accesories I find that nothing seems to be freezed up or excessive slop in pulleys. whats up? Can I drive the car to a mechanic 5 miles without running the belt on and causing another problem? Sounded so bad I hate to run the car with the belt on. The belt appears to be in fine shape as well.
