Heater Core Replacement

I plan to tackle mine soon. I have the core, o-rings, and clips. Reading how-to posts, you either need to blow the antifreeze out or be ready to catch a bunch when you open it up. I don't have a compressor to blow it out. Has anyone tried lowering the antifreeze level in the radiator to drain the heater core prior to opening it up?
