Runs rough, whirring noise. 850

I have a 1994 850 non-turbo automatic on cold startup I get a whrring noise (sounds like a pump) in the front right (US Drivers side)of the engine comartment and during the period of the noise the car almost stalls. The noise only starts when I shift into a gear (forward or reverse) and continues for abou 30-60 seconds after that the car runs fine. Any suggestions?
