Air pump question: putting '96 engine into '94 850 850

The air pump on my dead '94 850 engine puts air into the exhaust system via channels drilled into the head into the exhaust ports. The air feeds through a pipe bolted to the top of the head. The head on the '96 cannot accept that pipe.

The replacement '96 engine seems to put air into the exhaust system via a pipe bolted to the exhaust manifold on the driver's side. Unfortunately, my '94 engine's exhaust gas recirculation system mounts to the manifold in exactly the same place.

My son's suggestion is to mount the '94 head on the '96 engine. I'd sorta like to avoid this. Any suggestions?

(...Besides the obvious one: don't swap engine years on cars with so many engine controls.)

Thanks for the help.
