Outer CV Boot - replace boot or replace driveshaft? 850

The outer CV Boot (driver's side) on my 1996 850 Turbo with 97K mi has split and has thrown grease.

It looks like two options - repack bearings and replace the boot (less than $20 for kit plus labor) or replace the driveshaft (Rebuilt shaft about $150 plus labor).

I searched the site, and it looks like outer CV boot replacement is pretty common. Do you have to remove the whole driveshaft to do this, or just remove the wheel, hub, etc to get to the CV joint?

Anything tricky about repacking the CV Joint?

It looks like getting to the Outer CV Joint is about 90% of the work to replace the whole drive shaft, so I'm tempted to do the drive shaft just to avoid having to do it all over again later.

I was thinking of tackling the job myself, so any tips?

Thanks everyone!

BTW the dealer wants $400 just to replace the boot.
