Got my heart (seriously) fixed on an 850 now! 850

The key word is "seriously." I've always been in love with the Volvo 850 and the later S70, with a special love for the estate versions. Anyway, The 850 was in my shopping list when I was looking for a new-to-me, long-term, "sophisticated" car. I kind of wanted a Volvo, but my heart was in for a Mercedes-Benz, at that time a 1990-1993 190E (90-93 E-Class was a primary choice but the prices were beyond my budget at the time and the size really too big for my needs). After searching and almost about to give up on my M-B, I decided that I would take a look at this 1993 850. If I recall it was light blue and was within my price range, perhaps a little lower than the M-B prices. I was ready to get it after work if it turned out okay. But on my way to work, I picked up the latest issue of the Recycler and I see this ad for a 1990 190E--change of plans. After work I head to the dealership and checked out the car. It was a cream puff! After a few more visits to inspect the car further, I took the plunge and bought the car. (I was a terrible negotiator, and my friends were of no help in supporting me because they said that I should get a BMW or something more sporty.) Well, I was happy and still am. The car is still a cream puff. The car has treated me well, and I still love the design of the W201 body. So that's a little short story about how Swedish steel lost to this panzer wagon.

I no longer have my 245, so I'm looking for another Volvo. I had thought about another 245 for another run-about. But after some research, I think I can spend a tad more for an 850, preferably an 855. Well, today I went to this public auction--my first one ever--and there were two 1994 Volvo 850s. One was a champange-colored estate and the other was a dark green sedan. I looked at the 855 and it just won me over. When it came time to bid, I was too nervous to scream out loud. Needless to say, I didn't get it. I believe the car sold for about $4900. The color wasn't my type and there were a few scratches and dents, anyway. Next time!

I'm more looking into an 855. I know Volvo brought out the wagon in 1994. How does the 94 wagon differ from the 95 and so on? I know there is a small difference in styling between the 94 and 95 sedans. If I were to get a sedan, I'd prefer a 95+ model; the taillight styling is better. Most likely my budget would only allow me to get a 94 model unless I find a great deal in a late model. What do I need to lok for when shopping for a Volvo wagon?
