94 850 AC problem 850 1994

Just recently my AC began acting up the compressor clutch will engage for two seconds then disengage for three, repeat, repeat, repeat. At no time will it engage any longer. I checked the refrigerant and it is at an acceptable level but no cool air is coming out. The car has 178,000 miles and as far as I know the AC has never been worked on.
Any advice on what to look for????
