Bad preostats? 850 1996

I've got a GLT wagon that has around 30000 miles on it. With the hot spell we had last week, I turned on the air and found it to be inoperable. A mechanic I had check it said that he thought it was the 'preostats' (?) that were leaking and that they should be replaced. A friend who is also a mechanic said that he didn't think that preostats went bad or would leak. Anybody able to speak definitively on this? Do preostats go bad and or leak? Thanks for any input.

Mick
