Master cylinder vs. ABS servo pump - how can I tell? 850 1994

I own a 1994 850T and absolutely love it, but the repair costs are eating me alive...Yesterday I experienced a problem with the brake pedal going soft when stopped. Fine when moving, very slowly goes soft at a stop. I took the car into the dealer this morning and the initial thought was that the master cylinder was going. Got the dreaded "we have bad news" call this afternoon that the ABS servo pump was leaking and would have to be replaced at a cost of $1,700 ($1,368 for the part).

I'd really appeciate some advice - how can I tell if it's really the servo pump and not the master cylinder? Is there some other less-costly alternative to try before taking out a loan to pay for this repair?
