How to run 225s on the 850 850 95

There have been a number of threads on the forum regarding whether you can run 225s on the 850. The answer has been no - they rub.

I found a combination that runs without rubbing, even at the maximum turning angle:

Vehicle:

1995 Volvo 850 Turbo Sedan

Stock wheels: 16" Volvo alloy

Stock tires: 205/50/16

Modifications:

Eibach Sport Springs (lowers car 1 - 1.2 inches)

Koni Sport Shocks

ipd Anti-sway bars

Replacement wheels: SSR GT1 17X7.5

Tires tested: Kumho 225/45/17 Victoracer 700, shaved to 4/32 (competition tires)

Specs:

225/45ZR17

Rim Width 7.5"

Section Width 9.2"

Tread Width 8.6"

Diameter 24.6"

Revolutions per mile 848

The offset on the SSR wheels in the 7.5" width seems to be enough to place the tire correctly in the wheel well, even with the Eibach springs. The combination REALLY fills the wheel well visually.

I checked Kumho's ECSTA Supra 712 (Street Tire) and the diameter is a tad larger - 24.9 inches. That might be a bit tight with the lowering springs. Note, however, that the lowering springs also may be keeping the car off the tires given their higher spring rate. If you can locate a tire with the same or smaller diameter I don't see why you'd have a problem.
