Difference between -70 & -90 & other questions

My 1993 850GLT is at the point where it doesn't seem worth repairing. I am looking for a newer used Volvo and I really don't know which models I want to look at.

What is the difference between the vehicles with the suffix "70" and the suffix "90"? I see, what looks to me, some decent prices for used Volvos with those suffixes.

Does anyone have an idea of the difference in gas kilometrage for a wagon and a cross country?

How hard is it to heat the wagons and cross countries? I live in Quebec and really need a vehicle that heats up reasonably quickly.
