My dealer (in Danbury, CT) told me that they can find no fault codes or any problems in my car--'95 850 turbo wagon, 125K miles--that would make the check engine light come on and make it so that it can't be reset. After talking to a tech at volvo central, everyone involved concluded that the fault was in my ECU. No one at Volvo had ever heard of this happening before, but repeated diagnostic work lead everyone to believe that this was the problem. The car runs fine; there has been no change in performance or gas mileage. I was told that it is probably OK to continue driving the car--and I have been for the past 2 months-- but that if a serious problem does arise, I won't have any warning becasue the check engine light is already on. I was told that my alternative was to buy a new ECU ($1K!),or a used one (3-4 hun).
This all made me think of getting a tuned-chip ECU from one of the many places who sell them. So....any advice about whether to avoid a chip that would put more strain on a car with 125K miles? All all chips tuners ostensibly the same? Should I just bite the bullet and get a new ECU? A used one? Or one that will assure I get more speeding tickets. Thanks for all of you who offer advice.
