Rattles in tailgate (wagon) 850 1995

The plastic clips on the enside of the "tailgate" lower inside piece are all loose and broken. Volvo sold me a kit to repair it that is just some pieces of metal to reinforce where the clips go into the plastic. All is good except that I now have all clips off but can't figure out how to get the plastic off where the inside latch is. Anybody know the trick?
